Why Go to Therapy?
Therapy isn't only for moments of crisis. On what therapy is, who it can help and how the process works.
Why Go to Therapy?
Deciding to go to therapy is not easy for anyone. Thoughts and beliefs that seeing a psychologist means being “ill” hold people back from making that first appointment. Yet with psychological support, a person can learn how to cope with the stress of daily life, overcome difficulties in their relationships and free themselves from problems that affect their daily functioning.
If activities you used to enjoy no longer interest you, if you have lost your motivation in life, if you find it hard to control your emotions and have sudden emotional outbursts, if negative thoughts about the future won't leave your mind and anxiety is taking over, getting psychological support will be helpful.
I'd like to share a saying I love and find very useful: “You can easily hold a glass in your hand for 5 minutes; after 2 hours your arm may get very tired and start to ache; but holding that glass for days will harm your whole body.” Think of coming to psychotherapy as a way of slowly putting down the glass you've been holding for a very long time and repairing the harm it has done. Do yourself a favour and make that first appointment.
